Located in Metro Cebu, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, then called the Consolacion Bridge, is an extradosed cable-stayed bridge and is currently the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Philippines. This bridge was significant for its engineering innovation in 1999.
A cable-stayed bridge is a bridge which has one or more towers (or pylons). The towers serve as support for the cables that run across the bridge deck. A distinctive feature of a cable-stayed bridge is that the stays or cables form a fan-like pattern or a series of parallel lines from the main tower to the deck.
This quite marvelous bridge for its time spans across the Mactan Channel connecting Mandaue City to Lapu-Lapu City in Mactan Island which is 1.6 miles (or 2.6 kilometers) from the north end of the bridge and has a total length of 1,237 meters with a center span of 185 meters.
The bridge was opened in August 1999 and was made to decongest the traffic from the older Mactan–Mandaue Bridge, which is a truss bridge..
