What is an Ah Tay Bed and How is it Related to the Cebuano Word “Gi-Atay”?

So, I came across this very interesting post on facebook by the Max Limpag, a journalist and blogger in Cebu City. It talked about how the word Gi-atay was from the Ah tay bed. So,in this video I will be talking about Architectural furniture specifically about the wonderful bed design called the  Ah Tay bed. We usually see this bed in old houses and maybe your grandparents still have this bed so let me know in the comments section below.

Ah Tay bed is a  bed – with its intricate carvings of flowers and fruits – is by the renowned Chinese furniture maker Ah Tay. The bed was a matrimonial bed and it has intricate carvings in both the legs and the headboard. The legs have this squash shaped detail at the legs and the uppart parts have this Grape shaped details which signifies fertility since it is a matrimonial bed. The head board has Fern shaped carvings and the bed is also made of solohiya. It was a favorite of affluent families all over the country in the 1700.

So how is it related to the word Gi-atay? Personally, I though that the word gi-atay is related to the liver condition because atay is the Filipino word for liver.  And so when I saw Max Limpag’s post, I was very interested about this bed, Apparently, the word is related to a historical bed, the Ah Tay bed as explained in the first half of this video.  According to Max Limpag, Architect Tony Abelgas, who led the restoration of the 1730 Jesuit House in Parian, the atay’s etymology has roots in this furniture.. Abelgas said that when people referred to those who were already bed-ridden, they said that they were just on their Ah Tay bed. These repeated references, he said, ultimately led to the use of “gi-atay na” to describe someone dying.

Pirteng Ataya jud diay!! Naka balo nakog new amazing knowledge. Oops. Bad expression diay ni!
