Metal Roofs vs. Roof shingles

Metal Roofs vs. Roof shingles

These two roofing materials are the crowning glory of every home. What is the difference between them?

For starters, a shingle roof is a roof composed of individual overlapping elements. These are typically flat and rectangular-shaped tiles that are laid in courses overlapping each other over flat sheeting.

A metal roof on the other hand are roofs in corrugated tin, zinc, aluminum, galvanized metals, and even copper panels. Some metal roofs are now made in long spans.

Let us now compare the two. Metal roofs are more durable than shingle roofs. It can stand for as long as 50 years. But they can easily be dented by falling debris and branches.

Roof shingles, on the other hand, have shorter life spans because of its design. Because roof shingles are relatively flat, water can pool or damp the roof causing algae or fungus to grow. That is why it can only last as long as 30 years.

Lastly, shingles are easier to install and repair compared to metal roofs. It can be installed in a day or two especially when the roofing frame and top layers are in place.

Metal roofs require more skilled workers to install because there can be no errors in cutting. But if the cutting is done correctly, they can also be installed quickly.

Essentially, the choice of material is up to your architect, and this will depend on many important factors. After all, homes aren’t called “a roof over one’s head” for nothing.
