The Manila Metropolitan Theater stands as a beacon of cultural heritage, celebrated for its stunning art deco architecture that elegantly intertwines local flora and fauna. Designed by the renowned Juan Arellano in the 1930s, this architectural gem has captivated generations with its intricate details and historical significance.
In 2021, a landscape rehabilitation and conservation project was initiated to conserve the theater’s surrounding landscapes, culminating in completion in 2022. Under the expert guidance of Landscape Architect Zayra B. Bulawan, this project was marked by a commitment to adaptive reuse and conservation, ensuring that the site honors its rich cultural legacy while embracing modern needs.
A Cultural Treasure Reimagined
The design concepts for the new landscapes were deeply inspired by the building itself, reflecting the vibrant essence of Manila from the 1930s to the present. The vision was brought to life with a carefully curated selection of lush, native plants like Sampaguita, Gumamela, Pink Bougainvillea, and Calachuchi– each holding a special place in Filipino Culture. This blend of flora along with other plants not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes biodiversity, creating a serene environment that pays homage to the theater’s storied past.
As the Manila Metropolitan Theater continues to thrive as a cultural and national treasure, the revitalized courtyard landscapes invite visitors to experience history and nature, ensuring that this architectural masterpiece remains a cherished part of the community for years to come.
