Astana Darul Jambangan

Astana Darul Jambangan

The Astana Darul Jambangan or the Palace of Flowers was the palace of the Sultanate of Sulu based in Maimbung, Sulu, Philippines. Destroyed by a typhoon in 1932, this architectural gem is believed to be the largest royal palace in the Philippines.

Astana are royalty houses of the Tausug Moro Cultural Community which are believed to have originated in Astanah Putih, in Umbul Duwa in the municipality of Indanan on Jolo Island. The term Astanah Putih is a Tausug term for White Palace. Here, the original Seat of the Royal Sultanate of Sulu was formed during the 14th century. Later, it was transferred to Maimbung during the 1800s.

Architecturally speaking, the royalty houses are rectangular in plan and have two storeys. The first ground floor is open with exposed large columns. The dominant feature of this royalty house is its Y-shaped grand stairs in the center facade which and its surrounding by large verandas at the second and third floors.

A contemporary life-sized replica of the palace exists in Jolo, Sulu.
