The interior renovation project titled “Dayon Kamo: A Proposed Interior Renovation for Balay Samaritano in Cebu City supported by the Third Place Theory”, was initiated by a group of graduating students from the University of San Carlos’ Bachelor of Science in Interior Design program in May 2023. The phrase Dayon Kamo, a common Cebuano greeting, translates to “welcome, come in,” reflecting the project’s intent to create an inviting space.
Led by the graduating students of the said program, the project focuses on revitalizing Classroom B within Balay Samaritano to create a space that is not only practical but also deeply aligned with the needs of its users. Drawing inspiration from the Third Place Theory, which highlights the value of spaces that serve as community hubs outside of home and work, the goal is to design an environment that fosters connection, inclusivity, and well-being.
Guided by a team of expert interior designers—IDr. Adrian del Monte, IDr. Hermie Ray Oplado, IDr. Alvin Toribio Abrea, IDr. Lionel Joseph Sanchez, and IDr. Juliene Lim—the students have crafted a renovation plan that carefully balances aesthetics with functionality. Their vision is to transform the space into a welcoming and accessible environment that enhances the user experience while staying true to the mission of the shelter.
The Dayon Kamo project celebrates the transformative power of design to uplift and support communities. As the renovation of Classroom B nears completion, the space is set to become a more inclusive, supportive, and human-centered environment for those who need it most.
