When the early pre-Hispanic civilizations here in the Philippines settled their differences at sea and made their mark in history, several of our ancestors did so aboard the karakoa. Karakoa were Philippine large outrigger warships that were used by native Filipinos prior to the coming of the Spaniards in the archipelago. It is believed that the Kapampangans and the Visayans use these warships for seasonal sea raids.
These sea vessels were distinct from other traditional vessels because they had platforms for warrior transport and for easy fighting at sea. Unlike other vessels which were used for trade and commercial transportation, these large vessels were used for the purpose of raid and war.
