Comparing Paint Brands in the Philippines

Comparing Paint Brands in the Philippines

By Ar. Gloryrose Dy Metilla

Paints are very important elements of architecture because of their capacity to set the tone, literally. Some psychologists even argue that color determines the mood of certain spaces. In architecture, paint brands affect this further, and we can say that from experience. Some brands are more vibrant than others while other brands do have that more subdued hue that other people love.

We asked some Filipina Architects and asked them what they can say about these four most popular paint brands in the Philippines, namely Davies Paints Philippines Inc, Boysen Philippines, Nippon Paint Philippines, and Island Premium Paints. Check out the pros and cons of each popular paint brand.

Davies Paints Philippines, Inc.

Davies, one of the leading paints in the country, first operated as Charter Chemical and Coating Corp in Metro Manila. Davies Paints is popular among consumers, painting contractors, engineers, designers, and architects. “They deliver their promises, and their products are affordable,” says Ar. Mary Catherine Diaz of Swito Designs Architects.  Davies paints are vibrant for some designers and painters. “They also last longer,” says Ar. Ayris Pecdaen.

Pacific Paints (Boysen) Philippines

On the other hand, Boysen Philippines is the leading paint brand in terms of popularity and is known as the most trusted paint brand in the country.  Founded in 1953 with its initial trade name Columbus, Boysen was initially a company that repacks paints and lacquer. The company further expanded its own production and later introduced NATION® House Paints, an economy grade paint. Finally, in 1960, they became BOYSEN® Paints in the Philippines when they acquired the license to manufacture the paints from the Walter N. Boysen Company of Oakland, California, USA.

For Ar. Tel Omoguis, Boysen is a better top coat because it fills the area to be painted faster compared to other paint brands and that is why she prefers it. Other architects also prefer Boysen as their primer paint because of similar reasons.

Nippon Paints Philippines Inc.

Contrary to what mainstream paint users may think that Nippon Paints came quite recently, NIPPON PAINT PHILIPPINES, INC (NPP) was already established in 1976 in Manila. Their sole distributor during this time was Paint Marketing Company Philippines Inc. They gained more popularity in recent years when they sponsored the UAP National Convention which introduced them to a wider market.

Nippon Paints is a very popular and trusted paint brand. Their colors are stylish and more crisp compared with other brands.

Island Premium Paints

Founded in the 1950s, Island Premium Paints is a paint and chemicals manufacturing brand owned and operated by Cebu-based manufacturing conglomerate Treasure Island Industrial Corporation (TIIC). It is globally competitive and is one of the leading brands used for high-quality acrylic paint with a durable flat finish.

Although Island Premier Paint is used rarely as topcoat paint by designers, it is one of the preferred skim quotes by painters.

We hope you learned about common paint brands in the Philippines. Talk to your painter or architect or contractor and ask them which brands they prefer.
